A NEW WAY
Many have asked, “Why the name New Way Communication Therapy?” There are numerous reasons for the name; however, the final decision came by way of one of my clients. We were working hard one morning on his fluency and he said, “…you always find a NEW WAY to teach me things.”
A STRONG BELIEF
I feel it is imperative that I continue to stay current in the field and consistently seek NEW WAYS to best work with individuals. This may mean adjusting treatment methods, materials, approaches, and sometimes even settings. Individuals learn differently, and I strive to find what will make the most enjoyable, successful experience for each person.
AN INDIVIDUAL APPROACH
My primary focus is birth to 12 years of age; however, I work with all ages for feeding and speech as well as fluency and social thinking skills. I have extensive experience working with children having numerous challenges including autism, Down Syndrome, emotional and behavioral impairments, and cerebral palsy to name a few. While this is the case, I believe in treating the individual, not the disorder or syndrome. Each individual is different and cannot be “classified” as a disorder. This is critical for evaluation and therapy.
Parent involvement is important. I encourage parents to observe and participate in therapy sessions. This allows for a better understanding of the child’s difficulties and needs. Working together as a team in this manner increases the rate of progress and provides a better understanding of interventions. In addition, it is critical for home programming.
